If you reached this article, then you have already heard about the metaverse in some way and how most organizations from government to private enterprises are embedding the metaverse capabilities in their strategy and announced their intention to adopt the metaverse in their business.
Although there is no widely accepted definition of what is the metaverse, in this article, I will not go through the definitions and what is the metaverse, and what are the building blocks for it. I would assume that you have explored what it means and what are the enabling technologies for that. If you are searching for the use cases, I assume that you have that foundational knowledge of what the metaverse is about and what is not about.
The best way to understand the use cases is by grouping them in affinity clusters. Affinity Clustering is a method to organize items into logical groups. The items will be the use cases and the groups will contain vertical groups according to the industries and horizontal logical groups according to the purpose of the use case usage, they are mainly answering why as an individual or as a business I join or immerse myself into the metaverse.
To come up with the below groups, we need to get out of the virtual image, AR/VR/MR, and back to basics. We agree that the metaverse is kind of a place regardless of the combination of the physical and virtual worlds. It is a place at the end, like any place on earth. You can imagine it as a room, building, city, country, or whole planet. If you agree, let us continue.
This place can perform any activity that any person or business can do. So, if I need to travel to a city, I will travel for different reasons, for example, to visit friends, go to events, to tourism, explore culture, and so on.
If a business needs to open a branch in a new city or a new country, it opens also for a reason, like marketing and sales, expanding its support and operations, trading, and so on.
The same reasons are applied in the metaverse, according to that theory, I defined eight logical groups that any individual or business can use the metaverse for, while how they will use it and the ultimate outcomes of that are depending mainly on the industry itself, let us explore the groups and their meaning, then mapping the use cases according to the known industries.
The logical groups
The eight groups are:
- Assisting or getting assisted
- Servicing or getting served
- Probing, Simulating, and imagination
- Experiencing and practicing
- Visiting & Transporting
- Trading & Marketing
- Entertaining & Gaming
The groups are mainly built to cluster the use cases, while this does not mean that you join the metaverse for one purpose you can do multiple things together, like socializing while practicing or visiting, and so on. Below, I’m explaining the eight groups with some examples.
The main purpose of socializing is to meet colleagues, friends, and family, or know new people as well. It can be just online coffee chat, event participation, or joining a community of interest.
Before and during Covid-19, online socialization is very important, thanks to the social media and video conferencing tools that played a critical role during the pandemic and beyond.
Socialization in the metaverse will take a new shape, with the ability to build your avatar and join millions of others.
Assisting or getting assisted
Individuals and businesses can also join the metaverse to get assistance from their co-workers or partners, for example, an individual may join the metaverse to learn more about how to obtain a government service or apply for it directly, or in another way to assist someone by sharing knowledge.
Another example, as an employee in an organization you can join Metaverse to assist your colleagues in designing a new tool or app or show them how to use a new device, or help a new hire to onboard him/her into the organization.
Servicing or getting served
Providing service is an additional step after assistance, organizations can join the metaverse to provide their services through an immersive experience, like establishing a bank branch in the metaverse while the customer can visit to open a new account. Or a doctor to give consultation to his/her patients.
Probing, Simulating, and imagination
It is mainly the activities that organizations would like to design a new thing, and how they interact together to design, build, and simulate future scenarios, here the user-generated content is mainly a key to imagining new things and placing them accordingly.
Individuals as well can do the same for different reasons, learning & research are part of the reasons, while also, individuals can use it to design their home for example, and visualize it in the metaverse.
Experiencing and practicing
It is hard to design an experience in the real world, but with the metaverse, this can be done easily. Mainly this group is about joining a new experience to practice new knowledge and living the simulation that has been already built. For example, when an individual design their home and imagines what it looks like, or can experience living inside that model, and see if something needs to be changed.
Visiting & Transporting
In this type of engagement, you will visit an experience that may or may not imitate the real world, for example, you can visit a digital replica or twin of an existing city on the metaverse to learn about it and see the culture as if you already visited it physically. You can also visit a very old city that does not exist in our world to see how it was. Or you can even go to your friend Metaverse’s home and assist your friend in designing and simulating their future home.
Trading & Marketing
We heard about digital assets and how trading is done using the blockchain in the metaverse. This group is mainly for that purpose, but it does not mean that you are only trading digital assets, but also you can join to trade other physical products or do marketing for your organization as well as normal business practices, like sales. Similarly, individuals, they can buy or sell personal belongings and digital assets too.
Entertaining & Gaming
This is the dominant and known group for the metaverse as it was the origin of the birth of the metaverse.
The use cases
I added the use cases in an excel sheet to make it easier to navigate, you will find the rows present the logical groups and columns present the industries. I could not mention all industries, but you can imagine the art of possible using the metaverse to enable new ways of collaboration and work.
I will be happy to also receive your feedback, you can contribute to mention other use cases to build a definitive guide for all industries as reference.
Moreover, if you would like to read more, I recently wrote a Joint Research paper regarding Envisioning Architecture of Metaverse Intensive Learning Experience (MiLEx): Career Readiness in the 21st Century and Collective Intelligence Development Scenario has been published by Future Internet.
The paper discusses the role of the metaverse in re-imagining the learning experience to reinforce the development of 21st-century career practices and collective intelligence.
Looking forward to your feedback and contribution

Brilliant as usual. Thank you for this article. I liked the excel sheet & I believe you can add the “patient support groups” as an example of socializing use case in healthcare.
Thank you Eman, great suggestion as usual
